Sensory-Friendly Care for Kids

Special Needs Pediatric Dentist in Brooklyn

Bite Squad Dental of NYC provides dental care for children with autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, and sensory processing differences at 2464 Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn. Care is led by Dr. Yury Slepak, DDS, a board-certified pediatric dentist, and built around how your child actually experiences a visit: extra time, a calm room, sensory-friendly tools, and a sedation range that goes up to hospital care when a child needs it. The front desk and providers speak English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Russian, and a parent is welcome to stay in the room the whole time.

"My child has major sensory issues he was able to withstand a deep cleaning from this incredible dentist!!! Wish I could give them 6 stars"

Elisa Levi

A board-certified pediatric dentist who plans for your child

Dr. Yury Slepak, DDS, founded Bite Squad Dental of NYC and has spent more than 20 years treating Brooklyn children. He graduated with Honors from the New York University College of Dentistry and completed his pediatric dentistry residency at Maimonides Medical Center, where he trained in treating children of every age and ability. He works alongside board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Jessica Borukhova and the office's pediatric dentists. For a child with special needs, that training shows up in the small decisions: how a visit is paced, when to pause, which tools to introduce slowly, and when sedation or hospital care is the safer path.

How special needs dentistry works here

A standard cleaning assumes a child can sit, follow instructions, and tolerate the lights, sounds, and feel of dental tools. Many children with special needs cannot do all of that on the first try, and that is planned for here. Visits can run longer so there is room to go slowly and take breaks. The room can be kept calm and quiet to lower sensory load. Soft mouth props and adaptive tools are on hand. Before any treatment, the office can schedule a familiarization visit so the room, the chair, and the team feel known before anything happens. Your child sees a consistent team and a consistent space, which matters when change itself is the hard part.

"Excellent, professional, and fast dental service. Special thanks to Dr. Yelena Hofman and her assistant for their professionalism and care for my son, who has special needs."

A sedation range, and honest limits

Comfort is matched to what your child needs, starting with the least involved option. For mild nerves, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) helps a child relax while staying awake. When more help is needed, the office offers oral conscious sedation, and IV sedation in the office for cases that call for it. For extensive treatment, or for a child who cannot be treated comfortably in the chair, Dr. Slepak schedules care at a certified hospital. There, a pediatric anesthesiologist administers and monitors general anesthesia while the dental team completes the work in one setting. The honest version matters here: the dentist does the dentistry, and a pediatric anesthesiologist, not the dentist, runs the general anesthesia. During the free consultation, the team talks through which option fits your child and why.

Why families stay, including the ones turned away before

Some parents arrive after a visit somewhere else went badly, or after being told their child was too difficult to treat. Those are the families this office is set up for. A parent is welcome to stay in the room the whole visit. Visits can be shortened or split across appointments so nothing has to be forced. The same team and the same room each time give an anxious child something predictable to hold onto. The goal of a first visit is a calm exit, even if that means doing less today and more next time.

"I like this dental office for children. Super kid friendly, super clean and modern.. great support for special needs children.. staff is understanding and kind to all children and families.. highly recommend to all.."

Care in your family's language

For a parent of a child with special needs, being able to explain what sets your child off, and to understand exactly what the dentist is doing, is part of safe care. The front desk and providers at Bite Squad Dental of NYC speak English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Russian, so that conversation happens in your language from the first call through treatment.

How to prepare your child for the visit

A little preparation makes a first visit easier. Call ahead and tell the office what helps your child and what to avoid, so the team can plan the appointment around it. Ask about a familiarization visit, where your child can see the room and meet the team with no treatment that day. At home, let your child hold a toothbrush and look at pictures of a dental visit so the tools and steps feel familiar. Use the same simple words each time you talk about going. Bring whatever comforts your child, a favorite item, headphones, or a preferred toy. If your child has ever bitten or has a strong reaction to specific sounds or textures, tell the team in advance so the visit is set up safely from the start.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you treat children with autism, ADHD, or sensory processing differences?

Yes. Bite Squad Dental of NYC treats children with autism, Down syndrome, ADHD, and sensory processing differences in Brooklyn. Care is led by board-certified pediatric dentist Dr. Yury Slepak, DDS, and visits are paced and adjusted around how your child responds.

My child gets overwhelmed at appointments. How do you handle that?

The office plans for it. Visits can be shortened or split, the room can be kept calm and quiet, sensory-friendly tools and a familiarization visit are available, and a parent is welcome to stay the whole time. Nitrous oxide, oral sedation, or hospital care are options when they are the safest path.

What sedation options are available for a child with special needs?

The range starts with nitrous oxide (laughing gas), then oral conscious sedation, then IV sedation in the office when a case calls for it. For extensive treatment or a child who cannot be treated in the chair, care is done at a certified hospital, where a pediatric anesthesiologist administers and monitors general anesthesia.

Can my child with special needs get braces?

Yes. Children with special needs can have orthodontic treatment, including braces. The treatment plan is adjusted to your child's oral and medical needs, and the office can talk through whether and when it makes sense.

What if my child bites or won't open during the visit?

Tell the team in advance if your child has a history of biting. Soft mouth props and other tools are used to keep the visit safe and comfortable for your child and the staff, and the pace is adjusted so nothing is forced.

Is the office set up for a child who uses a wheelchair or has limited mobility?

Ask the front desk when you call so the visit can be arranged around your child's mobility needs. The team will plan the appointment to keep your child comfortable and supported.

Do you speak languages other than English?

Yes. The front desk and providers speak English, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Russian, so you can explain your child's needs and understand the care in your own language.
