What Is a Stainless Steel Crown?

A stainless steel crown is a prefabricated metal cap that covers and protects a damaged baby tooth. Unlike fillings, which repair a small portion of the tooth, a crown wraps around the entire tooth to hold it together and prevent further damage.

These crowns are the standard of care in pediatric dentistry for baby teeth that have:

  • Large cavities that a filling cannot adequately restore
  • Teeth weakened after pulp therapy (baby root canal)
  • Teeth with developmental defects or enamel hypoplasia
  • Fractures or chips that compromise the tooth's structure

The crown stays on the baby tooth until the tooth falls out on its own, and the permanent tooth grows in underneath.

Why Stainless Steel Instead of White Fillings?

Both options have their place, and our team will recommend the right one based on your child's specific situation.

Stainless steel crowns are preferred when:

  • The cavity covers more than half of the tooth surface
  • The tooth has already had nerve treatment (pulp therapy)
  • The child is very young and the tooth needs to last several more years
  • The tooth is at high risk for additional decay

White (tooth-colored) fillings work best for smaller cavities where enough healthy tooth structure remains to support the filling material.

For front teeth, we offer tooth-colored alternatives when appearance is a concern. For back molars, stainless steel crowns are more durable and have a higher success rate in young children.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The entire process is completed in one appointment, typically taking 30 to 45 minutes.

1

Numbing the Area

We apply local anesthesia so your child feels no pain. For anxious children, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available.

2

Preparing the Tooth

The dentist removes the decayed portion and shapes the tooth to fit the crown.

3

Selecting the Crown

We choose the right size from our selection of pre-made crowns.

4

Fitting & Cementing

The crown is placed over the tooth and cemented into position.

5

Bite Check

We adjust the fit so your child can chew and close their mouth comfortably.

Your child can eat and drink normally after the numbness wears off (usually 1-2 hours).

Common Questions Parents Ask

Will my child feel pain during the procedure?

No. We numb the area completely before starting, and sedation options are available for children who need extra comfort.

How long does a stainless steel crown last?

It stays on until the baby tooth falls out naturally. For most children, that means 2 to 6 years depending on the tooth.

Will it affect the permanent tooth underneath?

No. The crown protects the baby tooth and maintains space for the permanent tooth. When the baby tooth falls out, it does so normally, crown and all.

Can my child eat normally with a crown?

Yes. After the initial numbness wears off, your child can eat and chew without restrictions.

Is stainless steel safe?

Stainless steel dental crowns have been used in pediatric dentistry for over 70 years. They are approved by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and are one of the most well-studied restorative options for children.
